Ring Sizing Myths: When Can I Size My Ring?
Posted by Smart Age Solutions on
There is so much information online about the risks of having your ring sized. In this post, we will discuss when you should and should not have your ring sized, as well as how much damage is done to your ring when sized, and where you can go to have your ring sized.
When should you size your ring?
Having a ring in the correct finger size is important for three main reasons: A ring is most comfortable when it fits correctly, there is less risk of it falling off, there is less risk of the ring turning and hitting stones on surfaces, damaging them.
When your ring is too tight, it will be difficult to remove and it might even leave an indentation on your finger. If your ring is too big, it could come off and get lost. If your ring is made of a precious metal such as gold, silver, or platinum, it can usually be sized. It is always recommended to bring it to your local jeweler for inspection to ensure the ring can be sized.
Knowing your finger size is very important. Most people do not know the correct finger size for each finger and each hand as they can vary greatly. Being sized by a professional local jeweler is the best way to go to make sure it is sized correctly the first time. Using other methods like string to measure the diameter of your finger is rarely accurate.
Once you know your finger size, have your local jeweler size it in-house. It should typically only take 7 days and will make a big difference in how it feels!
When should you not size your ring?
Even though it is always best to have a ring sized to fit you, there are some circumstances that it would not be advisable to have it sized.
Injury
If you recently injured the finger you wear your ring on, we do not recommend having it sized for at least 8 weeks or more depending on the injury. This will give your injury time to heal and any swelling to go away. Your finger may not ever go back to the size it was before the injury and that is okay. The important thing is to give it time to heal before finding out what your new size is.
Cutting it off
Sometimes, rings have to be cut off if they can not be taken off over the knuckle. Typically, the ring can be repaired like new in a new finger size after being cut off if it is a precious metal like gold, silver, or platinum. However, it is not recommended to have your finger sized the same day it is cut off. Most fine jewelry stores can handle this service. You can also go to a local fire department in an emergency but risk extensive damage to the ring.
We recommend waiting at least 8 weeks to give your finger time to heal and change shape since there will most likely be a deep indentation of where the ring was on the finger. Waiting to have it sized allows the indentation to go away and any swelling to dissipate.
Its design
Some rings are unable to be sized due to the nature of their design such as some eternity bands, channel-set bands, and other outliers. To know for sure if your ring can be sized or not, bring it to your local jeweler for an inspection. They will be able to tell you if your ring can be sized or not.
If it can not be sized the traditional way, there might be other ways to help it fit better, especially if it needs to go down in size. At Lamon Jewelers, we offer multiple kinds of attachable ring sizers for a snugger fit as well as special ways we can add gold to your ring to build up the inside of the shank for a better fit.
How is a ring sized?
Most commonly, an incision is made in the bottom of the ring or the shank. Then, depending on if it is going up or down, the metal is either ground out or added to in small amounts to make the diameter of the ring your perfect finger size. Using our state-of-the-art laser welder, it is soldered back together seamlessly. You won’t even be able to tell where the sizing was done. At Lamon Jewelers, we always polish, inspect, and clean each piece to make it look new after sizing it.
Will my ring be damaged if I size it?
Unless your local jeweler has recommended against having it sized due to the current condition, design, or age of your ring, it is perfectly safe to have your ring sized.
The process of sizing your ring does not damage it in any way. It is similar to driving on a new set of tires. Driving on them does not damage them. However, if you are sizing your ring many times, this can put wear on the ring similar to driving thousands of miles on a set of tires. To keep from sizing your ring multiple times, it is important to have your finger sized by an experienced local jeweler the first time.
